FoamLife was
founded in March 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown by three action-sports industry veterans—Timo Mullen, Daniel Macaulay, and Karl Read. Frustrated by corporate giants in the surf industry, the trio set out to build an authentic, eco-conscious flip-flop and slider brand.
Origins and Philosophy
The Founders: Timo Mullen (former windsurfing champion), Daniel Macaulay (founder of sports marketing agency Brandwave), and Karl Read brought decades of surf, design, and street-culture experience.
The Mantra: Their guiding philosophy is "Live Less Ordinary," focusing on a laid-back beach lifestyle and personal journeys rather than the daily corporate grind.
Launch: After self-funding initial development, they officially launched their debut collection in spring 2021.
Eco-Materials: Products feature vegan-friendly, PVC-free materials including recycled EVA, sugarcane EVA, BLOOM™ algae-blended foam, hemp canvas, and plant-based bio-leathers.
Plastic-Free Packaging: Packaging is entirely plastic-free from factory floor to customer, utilizing biodegradable cornstarch bags, recycled card hangtags, and paper string.
Global Reach: What started as a UK lockdown project expanded rapidly into international markets across Europe, South Africa, Australia, and the US.
Charity Work: The brand actively supports initiatives like Surfers Not Street Children in South Africa.
Evolution: The lineup has grown from classic men's and women's flip-flops to include diverse multi-occasion designs and closed-toe footwear collections.
