5mm WETSUITS

A 5mm wetsuit is the UK winter standard for most surfers. Water temperatures between 9 and 13°C, roughly October through April on England's south and west coasts, call for a 5mm. Dawn patrols, exposed north-facing reefs and anywhere the Atlantic keeps the temperature honest are all 5mm territory.

For autumn or warmer winter days, a 4mm will do. For the coldest conditions below 10°C, step up to a 6mm. A hooded wetsuit pairs well with a 5mm to lock in extra heat around the head and ears.
