Volcom was founded in 1991 in California by friends Richard "Wooly" Woolcott and Tucker "T-Dawg" Hall after a life-changing snowboarding trip to Lake Tahoe. Borrowing $5,000 from Richard's dad, they launched America's first boarding company to merge surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding under a rebellious "Youth Against Establishment" ethos.
A short video detailing the founding and early logo creation of Volcom:
The Volcom Story: The Start, the logo design, their team, near ...

Humble Beginnings and the Iconic Stone
No experience: Neither founder knew how to make clothes, running the early operation out of a bedroom.
The Logo: They created the famous asymmetrical "Volcom Stone" logo, representing a symbol of freedom and a rejection of mainstream authority.
Rough Start: They nearly went bankrupt three times in their first three years, grossing only $2,600 in year one.
Cultural Expansion and Disruption
Music and Film: In 1995, Volcom became the first action sports clothing company to launch its own record label, Volcom Entertainment.
Let the Kids Ride Free: They pioneered grassroots team management and contest formats that supported raw, unsigned talent.
