WAVES & TREES: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
November 30, 2019Since the beginning we’ve planted a tree for every order we receive. It’s a core principle of ours and remains at the heart of everything we do. Today we’re more committed than ever to our Waves & Trees initiative. We offer our community the option to make a real difference when picking up their adventure essentials.
To date we’ve planted 45,135 native trees all over the world. We celebrate planting milestones and are proud to be doing everything we can. But, images of the rainforests of Brazil burning as far as the eye can see left us feeling numb and asking how we can do more.
We found ourselves faced with some real questions. Is planting trees enough if the useable land and existing forests are shrinking, burning and under threat? The ancient rainforests dishing out all that sweet oxygen and home for all kinds of amazing animals.
Far from complacency, our search for solutions that mean we can do more as a brand and as individuals is never ending. A goal that founder Rich set out when we started Passenger was to plant 100,000 trees and in 2020 this is going to happen. A humbling prospect for everyone here.
HOW DID WE ACT?
For the next stage of our Waves & Trees initiative, we’re proud to announce that Passenger are now Patrons of The Rainforest Trust. We've joined their Conservation Circle, dedicated to saving rainforests all over the world.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR COMMUNITY?
As we head into gifting season we will offer the opportunity to protect acres of rainforest with every order, as well as planting new trees. For us, there’s a lot to be said for gifts that serve a bigger purpose; everyone wins.
One acre of rainforest protected in Peru would save around 160 trees and countless wildlife, offsetting 189 tonnes of stored CO2e. The Carbon Trust estimates that the average UK resident produces 11 tons of Co2 emissions per year. With our new programme, one Passenger order will offset the Co2 emissions of 17 UK residents per year.
For now we’re calling it Plant & Protect, Seed & Soil, Land & Leaves or something along those lines. Protecting the forests of today, planting the forests of tomorrow. More to come soon…
IT DOESN'T STOP THERE
As part of our Waves & Trees project we are focused on reducing single-use plastics and cleaning up our oceans.
Our new jackets are crafted from a sustainable recycled polyester ripstop, recycling around 21 bottles per Jacket.
